The 1 Year Anniversary of the April 27th 2011 Tuscaloosa Tornado

On this day just one short year ago, April 27th 2011, I found myself huddled in a bath-tub with 4 other girls covered with pillows and a mattress, protecting ourselves the best we could in the event that the impending category 6 tornado were to continue on its path and rip our home off the ground.

It was the most traumatizing, horrific, and emotional experience I have ever gone through...

The tornado sirens went off, and I was at home baking and preparing for an event I was throwing at my house later on that night. Only one of my housemates, my best friend Saran, was home. The news stations had been informing us all day long of the weather reports. Alerting locals of the possibility of a tornado touching down.  Historically Tuscaloosa was just north enough that most tornados did not touch down anywhere near us, but this time it was different.

I have always been very skittish when it comes to weather, you could say that before this tornado experience- lightning and thunder storms were one of my biggest fears. A bad storm could induce tears in a matter of seconds, irrational but true. Saran knew this, and kept me occupied with frosting cupcakes and decorating the house while she kept an eye on the news. Saran was orignially from Alabama and so she had experience with tornado sirens and the processes to follow. Me being an east coast girl, growing up in New England my entire life- the extent of weather disasters I dealt with included following the news watching a hurricane climb up the coast and having days to prepare the house for the potential damage, or massive amounts of snowfall that come with a strong winter blizzard- but tornados, that wasn't something I was at all prepared for.

The siren went off and Saran said to me "Jenn we have to go now." My heart stopped, I dropped the spatula that was in my hand on the floor, grabbed my phone and headed towards the front door. We lived in a 3 floor town house within a college complex just 2-3 minutes off campus. Our townhouse was located above a 4 person flat, because we were not at ground level we had to run outside, down the stairs, and hope that our neighbors below us were home and could let us in.

When I swung open our front door, the sky was yellow, like there was a color filter over the sun cascading this eerily yellow tint over everything. Thankfully the girls downstairs were home. In the event of a tornado, the safest place you can be is the inner most part of your home, especially away from windows. In most cases if you don't have a basement, the next best place to go is the bathroom because of how deeply rooted into the ground most plumbing is. We made our way to their bathroom, all 4 of us squished in a very small tub. The news channel was blasting so that we could listen until the electricity cut out. At this point we had absolutely no idea what was going to happen.

Our other friends and housemates were on campus at this point, we lived just a few minutes off campus, but the tornados' path that day thankfully avoided our school completely. We had been texting back and forth with them- as they were watching the tornado in its path of destruction on the news. Right before the cell signal cut out, my best friend Jessica who was on campus, texted me and told me to hold onto Saran and hold pillows to our heads as tight as we could, she was watching this tornado on the news as it made a beeline straight for our house and she told me "I love you, be safe."

The lights went out, the tv suddenly turned off, our electricity was gone, we knew then the tornado had to be close. My cellphone lost all service, and suddenly everything in the world was dead silent, the only thing you could hear was the four of us breathing heavily, waiting.

All we could do was wait, and hope, cross all our fingers and toes, hoping that this deadly tornado would some how, not tear us off the ground. Before we could blink the noise outside was suddenly louder than anything I had ever heard, everything in the room was shaking, for about 20 seconds it was loud like this, and then dead silent, and then back to the noise. Slowly the noise drifted farther and farther away until things were seemingly quiet again.

We waited there in the bathtub about 30 minutes after that before we opened the door, afraid to see what we would find. We walked out of the bathroom, slowly opened the front door- and saw, absolutely nothing.

Everything that was once standing, anything that if it were one hour prior we could see if we were standing on our front steps, had been demolished, left flattened, or thrown hundreds of feet in another direction. Tuscaloosa Alabama was unrecognizable. In a matter of minutes it had been reduced to a pile of rubble.

With some strike of luck, just as the tornado was no more than 50 yards from my front steps, it jumped to the other side of the street and continued to tear through the town we all called home- missing my house almost entirely.

Over 350 people were killed that day, innumerable amounts of homes were destroyed, and lives were completely devastated. Never in my life had I ever seen destruction to this extent.

My family, friends, and loved ones back home did not know for quite some time that day whether or not my friends, teammates and I in Alabama had survived the Tornado. Cell service was down, and the news channels at home on the east coast were going crazy trying to keep up with the storm tracking. All anyone from home knew, was that this deadly tornado had ripped through Tuscaloosa Alabama, leaving virtually nothing behind it.

I will never forget though, the way the people of Tuscaloosa Alabama came together in those next few days. Rallying together to help wherever they could. That had been my second year at the University of Alabama, and if I had learned anything while I was there- the most important was that the people would do anything, for anyone. It was a time of complete and utter devastation, and mourning- as many grieved the loss of loved ones, while many others held onto any shred of hope that their loved ones who had been missing, would be found in the rubble. Yet amongst all of the negative, the people of Tuscaloosa banned together, people traveled from all over the state of Alabama bringing supplies and resources, willing to help in any way possible.

It is so hard for me to believe that it has already been an entire year since this unforgettable experience, but not a day goes by that I don't think about the people who I was surrounded by and the support and sheer willingness to help, in any way possible, that I witnessed when this disaster took place.

Tuscaloosa Alabama will always be a place for me to call home; for the friends there who quickly became my family, the memories that I made, and the ways in which I grew from the experiences I had during m time there.

Above all else, I will never forget April 27th 2011. An experience that still makes me shutter to think about, and makes me sick to my stomach when I am asked to tell 'my story,' but at the same time makes me so proud to have been a part of such an incredibly amazing group of people. All coming together in a time of complete helplessness to make a difference. I write this today from the East Coast, on the one year anniversary of the tragic event, wishing more than anything I could be with my friends and family down there as this event and the many lives lost are memorialized, but they are all in my thoughts!

Going Gluten Free...

Recent research has shown many positive benefits of eliminating gluten from your diet. Studies have shown that some individuals' body make up may have a response to the ingestion of gluten that consequently triggers migraines. I am someone who unfortunately suffers from migraines on a weekly basis, when I read that there could potentially be a link between gluten and migraines I thought why not give it a shot! Not only could eliminating gluten from your diet minimize or absolve migraine issues- but it has also been proven that the ingestion of gluten affects different people in a variety of ways- it can negatively affect your mood, stress level, and energy.

Therein begins my gluten-free adventure. To begin with I was already a very picky eater, I have gotten a lot better over the years- my boyfriend tends to push the envelope and make me try new things- but none the less the variety of food that I eat is very limited, this paired with my intense involvement in collegiate rowing makes going gluten free and managing to take in the necessary nutrients is quite the task.

Here are some of the main foods that I include in my new gluten-free regime.

Grilled Chicken
Fresh Raspberries!
Organic Smooth Peanut Butter
Lightly Salted Cashews

Whole Natural Almonda
Granny Smith Apples

Bananas
For some crunch, these gluten-free pretzels are a delicious snack!

Do you have any interesting tricks and tips for gluten-free eating! Have you tried to go gluten-free?

What A Whirlwin!

The past two weeks have been non stop! Starting two weekends ago in Camden New Jersey, where my team did phenomenally well at the Knecht Cup Regatta. This is a picture of my boat racing in the heat, we came in first place and advanced to the semi-finals where we came in second and confirmed a spot in the Grand Finals!
The Monday following Knecht Cup was Marathon Monday! The infamous Boston Marathon, which fell on possibly one of the hottest days Boston had seen this year was an absolute blast! We had the day off from school, and it was a perfect day to relax with friends and cheer on the runners as they made their way through "Heartbreak Hill" right by our Boston College Campus! In this picture from left to right is John, Me, Jess, Ashley, Blake, Nick, and Shawn down in front!
This is my beautiful friend Rachel and I! One of our teammates ran the marathon and we all wore these tanks in support of her that say "Kates Crew" on the front! I love the neon pink!
These are some of my lovely teammates we all raced in the same boat at Knecht Cup! From left to right its, Ellen, Erica, Nicole, Emma, Me and Erin!
This is my boyfriend Sean and I!

The week after Marathon Monday went by really quick because that Friday was a travel day as my team flew to South Carolina where Clemson University hosted the ACC 2012 Rowing Championships. This is a picture of my boat, we made these shirts for this race, they say "2012 This is Our Year." My teammate Emma brought this tradition of making shirts to our team this year and I love it!
This is a picture of our boats' lineup for the ACC Championships. We got all dressed up the friday night before racing began and had a banquet with all of the other teams in the ACC. We were accompanied by Duke, UNC, UVA, Miami, and of course Clemson. We spend so much time in workout clothes it was nice to get dressed up for the night!
This year we started a new tradition on the team of having big and little sisters. These are my two little sisters, on the left is Katie and on the right is Kelly!

Me and our Captains! On the left is Charno and the right is Erin! They're incredible leaders, and amazing friends :)
It was a very busy few weeks, now we are back to the grind, this is our only weekend of the season without a race and with only two full weeks of classes left before finals begin, it's crunch time! Hard to believe that this year is almost over!

The Masters 2012

This years' Masters Champion is 33 year old, self taught, Bubba Watson!

In the history of the Masters Championship Golf Tournament, Watson is the fifth left handed golfer to don the world renowned "Green Jacket" in the past 10 years.

Watson is known for the tremendous length of his drive, averaging 290 yards per drive, and in fact after this weekends events, recording the longest drive of the Masters Championship at 324 yards.

Watson played with poise through the weekend and made his way into the sudden death playoffs against Louis Oosthuizen from South Africa. Watson finished first taking home a W with par on hole 10 after completing what ended up as a two hole playoff series, ahead of Oosthuizen. Watson had a final-round 68 for a 10-under-par 278 total.

Since Watson's first entrance into the world of golf as a professional, it has been nothing short of a challenge in both his professional and private life.

In 2010 Watson lost his father Gerry Watson to an aggressive throat cancer. It had been Bubba's personal goal to win the Masters before the cancer could potentially take his father once and for all, as Watson finished Sunday with a phenomenal gap wedge shot that soared toward the fairway and managed to hook about 40 yards landing precisely on the green, he finally shared that success with his father.

In Butler Cabin Sunday afternoon as the defending champ Charl Schwartzel helped Watson into the green jacket, Watson said,
"I've never had a dream go this far, so I can't really say it's a dream come true," Watson said. "I don't even know what happened on the back nine. ... Nervous on every shot, every putt. Went into a playoff. I got in these trees and hit a crazy shot that I saw in my head, and somehow I'm here talking to you with a green jacket on."
It was an incredible weekend of golf and the competitors were relentless throughout the entire championship- a heartfelt congratulations goes out to Bubba Watson as he revels in his new found success!

Above is a menagerie of photographs taken from this weekends tournament, from Bubba shaking the hands of his playoffs opponent Louis Oosthuizen, to the classic pink driver he took to the green in support of cancer research!

Can't wait until next years Masters!

Sunday Night Light Bulb

I am beginning to think nothing could be more true.

I drove home last night spur of the moment to have dinner with my family. Once dinner was long over, I found myself in the living room with my mom, dad and brother watching the Country Music Awards. As I was sitting there at home on a Sunday night, my mind was racing with all I had to do the upcoming week. Assignments that were soon due, deadlines approaching, impending interview results, the 9 practices and 1 race that separated me from my shortened Easter break.

I was at home with my family, relaxing in the living room as the rain fell outside, watching and listening to beautiful country music, and I was becoming more anxious and overwhelmed by the second. Something my brother had said got my dad laughing, and his big burst of laughter snapped me out of it, and I began to think- what the heck am I doing?

So often we find ourselves wrapped up in the ten thousand responsibilities we have, theres hardly time to breath! My friend Cate just recently posted about something similar, reading through her post I began to realize something, if we are always so inundated with thinking about everything we need to do, or will soon have to do, how will we every be able to enjoy and take pride out of what we have already done!

This was just a reminder to me that as hard as we work, striving daily for the successes we dream of- we have to be sure to acknowledged the deserved time to feel pride and joy from the accomplishments we do achieve- before we move straight to the next thing on the list!

Life is made up of a million small accomplishments and experiences, sometimes we forget to enjoy each and every one of them because we are too caught up in making sure the "end result" is how we envision and plan for it to be.

As I grow up, the more I realize that there is so much more to life than creating the perfect "end result," and I know for a fact I would rather take the time to enjoy and take pride out of everything I work for along the way, then arrive at my end result without having taken a second to stop and smile.

Love what you do, what you experience and what you see- all the happy and sad, good and bad- take time to feel the emotions, because at the end of the day nothing else will be more worth it or important to you if you didn't take the time to feel it.
