Water Is Life

You MUST watch this... seriously you can spare the 2:13 seconds for something this important!

Recently a friend posted a link to this video on Facebook, I decided to take a look- and I am glad that I did. Not only does this video demonstrate the importance of something as simple as clean water, something that I think 99.9% of us take for granted, but it offers you a way to help. A small, infinitesimal way to help something with much greater a meaning that just another donation.

As a recent college graduate, I feel like I have spent so much of this summer thinking about what I want to do, what I am doing, what I can do- and coming up with so few answers or explanations. I spent four years in college committing to something which truly had such incredible meaning for me- an experience one can only have in a college atmosphere. Now, outside of what we called the BC Bubble, (I went to Boston College if your new here...) and outside of my team- it's been a difficult transition trying to find something I am equally as passionate about with such immense meaning to me. This video though reminded me that this doesn't have to be in the form of one giant thing, but many different little things.

I think what this video reminded me is that we should all make more of an effort to find meaning in our lives in things other than personal satisfaction and enjoyment- but satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment from doing something that will provide someone else with enjoyment.  If we get too wrapped up in the big picture, that enormous part of your life that just means the world to you, you might forget that happiness truly can come in the simple things, like water.

Helping in this case doesn't have to be a donation- just by spreading the word, sharing the video to one friend who might share it to another who might be inspired and have the means to make a donation.. you never know what could be sparked by the simplicity of spreading the word...

Some of this & some of that

I am absolutely 100% obsessed with perfume, and I am always picking up a new scent here and there- this Jour de Hermes number!

I have really been trying to make time for more reading in my life, and this book by Robert Galbraith definitely has my attention!

Recently my best friend Cate introduced me to one of her favorite bloggers to follow LoveTaza- check it out!

Lastly, I have been eyeing these Valentino Patent Leather Booties on the Nordstrom site- unfortunately way out of any budget in the near future... but a girl can dream :)

13 of Bobbi's finest!

Make-up is my secret guilty pleasure, it is one of the (my dad would say many) impractical things I just love to purchase! This summer I decided to try out some of the Bobbi Brown Line and I have to tell you, I love it!

1-4 are my favorite everyday face products by Bobbi, I never really used face makeup and I am definitely still unsure if I'll stick with it but so far I love these products!
....4 Blush

5-6 are probably the top of my list by far, I absolutely love to play around with different eye make-up, these products are simple yet stunning for a classic everyday eye look!
....7 Eye Pencil

8-13 are pretty standard brushes used particular to each product/desired look. I have tried a few different brushes and must say I like these best! The best thing about the Bobbi Brown brushes is that they have an automatic LIFETIME warranty with your purchase!
...11 Blush Brush

H&M Online.... you got me.

H&M Online Shopping went LIVE this morning! H&M is not my typical "shop till you drop" store, but it is pretty reliable for a go-to basic or a novelty affordable jacket!

H&M stores can be found in over 40 countries, and as of this morning the United States added to the list of 9 countries which offer the corporations new online shopping venture!

These are just a few of the items that caught my eye, fall and winter style look books are approaching quicker than we may think!

Wardrobe Wednesday's

Of all the flats I own- my new Yosi Samra's are the absolute MOST comfortable and cute! The color, pattern, and style options with the Yosi Samra collection are endless, which makes this brand a perfect go-to when you want to add some pizazz to your ensemble!

I styled around my leopard print flats for work today with the following items:

City Tote in Saffiano (c/o my boyfriend's wonderful family) / Gold Link Bangle
Gold Pearl Black Swatch (purchased this one while  in  Switzerland)

Finding Your Feet: part one

All I have to say is WOW has my life spun off in a million different directions!

Per my most recent post (which admittedly was eons ago) the end of my senior year was even more of a whirlwind than the typical dramatics of your average college senior grasping to their final days as an undergrad, over the next few posts I will explain just how out of  control my life became...

Rewind a bit to the beginning of all the chaos and we arrive at May 12, 2013 when the Boston College Eagles traveled to Clemson, South Carolina to compete at the 2013 ACC Rowing Championships. This race was the culmination of all the hard work and time we put in throughout the year to be the fastest BC Women’s Rowing has ever been. Not only was ACC’s our last and final in-season race, but it was myself and my fellow seniors’ last in-season competitive collegiate race…ever.

The weekend was a roller coaster of emotion to say the least. Reflecting on 4 years of collegiate rowing, and almost 7 years of rowing in total- I am astonished by the innumerable, irreplaceable aspects of my life which are attributed to the sport of rowing. One thing in particular that I can say without a doubt in my mind: there is nothing in the world that has brought more incredibly amazing, genuine and sincere people into my life- people who are and forever will be family to me- than rowing has.

While ACC’s was the last time I would compete in a regulation NCAA Division 1 Collegiate Race, it was not the last time I would compete as an Eagle…we’ll get to that in part two…

The race, while UVA took the W...no surprise there- was one of the most emotional, and memorable races of my career and I wouldn't have wanted to share it with anyone other than the 8 girls who were in the boat with me. ACC's is a somewhat interesting experience for us because unlike the other races we compete at which are 2-3 days, ACC's is a one shot deal. You line up against your competition one time and see how the cards fall. With a race like that it wasn't long before we found ourselves on a plane back to Beantown again, with memories to last us a lifetime.

We touched down in Boston having just ended our collegiate rowing careers, with just one week to go before we found ourselves dawning the cap and gown for graduation-myself and my best friends were eager to celebrate.
However, moments after we got home my life came to a screeching halt when my dad and brother showed up at school to deliver the world’s worst news. My Papa, Edward Spellman- one of the most influential figures in my life, had fallen and was in critical care at Mass General Hospital.

Papa was an extraordinary man, and even extraordinary doesn’t do him justice. At 89 years old he had just decided to stop working and really retire, he was healthy as a horse and just as witty as ever. He lived by himself in the same 3 story house where my mother spent part of her childhood, he still covertly handed my brother and I a $5.00 bill every time he saw us, as if he was breaking the law by doing so, he still called my brother Drew, “Sam” a joke that has carried on since we were toddlers, and he still made my mother smile like no one in the world could.

As the years went by Papa’s walk slowly crept down to a shuffle, and the time it took to get from place to place grew longer- he had always told us the same incredible stories of his past but he began repeating them more often in a night. However, there was no story he repeated more often at the dinner table in my home than his memories of selling papers at the BC Football Games when he was a kid, and if there was anything my mom wanted- it was for Papa to be able to sit in the stands at Alumni Stadium and watch me graduate from Boston College.

That Sunday night, as I stood in the parking lot at school having been told the news of his fall- just one week from graduation, I was heartbroken by my fear that he might not make it back to Alumni Stadium for a trip down memory lane after all.

I spent the next 4 days waking up every morning and hopping on the green line, switching to the orange line at Park Street and eventually making my way to Mass General Hospital. The one week of the year that was supposed to be filled with events celebrating the end of my undergraduate career was no longer a celebration. That week- there was no place in the world I would have rather been than by his side during that time- after all, he had stood by mine for my entire life.

May 15, 2013 Papa passed away, and while I had been mentally and emotionally preparing myself throughout the week for the eventual outcome- I have never felt a more gut-wrenching heartache like that in my entire life. The weekend was spent honoring his legacy as best we could, with a beautiful service. I was surrounded by some of the most amazing and supportive people in my life, and my family said our final goodbyes to Papa. My eyes fill with tears as I write this because out of all the lessons I learned from Papa, it’s that there is nothing in the world more important than family- and family members go beyond your blood. Edward Spellman would put anyone of his loved ones before himself and he would do absolutely anything to help them- but above all he loved and cared for us with all he had, and in turn taught us how to love and care just as deeply.

After the services, and the week that seemed to last forever was finally through- I found it incredibly difficult to refocus on graduation. It seemed wrong to shift to a time of celebration when he couldn’t be there to join us, but as I was reminded by my supportive, loving and caring boyfriend- it was a time to celebrate his life and celebrate the amazing person he was. Papa would have wanted me to enjoy graduation- as much as it seemed wrong to enjoy it without him.

Graduation Day, which all week had been forecasted to rain- was absolutely gorgeous and consequently unbearably hot. Watching from the stands on the big day- along with my mom, dad, and my brother- were my dad’s parents (my Gramps even flew in from California,) my boyfriend Sean, and his mother who is an incredibly important person in my life- they all made it to graduation- and Papa did too- hence the 'out of the blue sunshine' the class of 2013 was able to enjoy.
It’s so cliché to say “big day,” yet when describing a graduation somehow it is the first descriptor we come to.  However, it was quite a day, consisting of unbearably hot temperatures, hours of enduring long winded speeches, recitation of a list of names that seemed to go on forever (when your last name begins with a J in a class of over 2000, 90 degree temperatures sitting on a turf field in a black cap and gown becomes the most epic form of torture imaginable), the last minute shuffle of move out, and at last, all my things piled into the truck, diploma in hand… I was done. 4 years and two schools later… I made it!

Now, after potentially boring you with my Memoir of May  I would really love to be able to say, “And the rest was history…”-but in fact as summer began my adventures only became more out of this world.

A 3 week jaunt to Europe with my amazing teammates.

A new puppy named Charlie.

& my first real world job.

It felt like there was no time to breathe before the next chapter of my life began, but I was ready for it… or so I thought!

Long Time, No Blog

Hey Guys! Sorry it has been so long since I've posted- second semester senior year has been a whirl win to say the least!

My team is at the height of our competition season, with only four weeks and our most important races left on the schedule it is absolutely crunch time. The weather, until recently has been rather dismal, and cold- but it looks like spring is finally starting to swing around and it'll be sunny and warm for the end of the year! This weekend we are heading to New Jersey to compete at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River. There are 30 different schools competing at this two day regatta and the Eagles are so ready to take first!

With classes coming to an end; projects, papers, and exams have been piling up! On top of that, interviews and job hunting is practically a full time job in itself!

Speaking of interviews, the idea of actually graduating college is definitely knocking on our door more and more every day! My dreams of what the next chapter of my life is going to look like are becoming less like dreams, and more of a reality... as cheesy as that is to say!

Step 1: Job
Step 2: Apartment in the City
(some fun apartment ideas above)
Step 3: Get a puppy
(although my impatience might move this to be step 1)
Step 4: No clue!

I think that is probably the most terrifying part of the next chapter of my life, having no clue! Since I have been in school, things have been pretty laid out for me in terms of what I spent my time doing, with little actual choice in the matter.

From K-12th grade, your main job is to go to school. I have always played sports... so you could say that was a personal choice, but even with that you choose to play a sport, tryout and make a team, and then theres another schedule that you commit to honor with someone else telling you where to be, and when.

Graduating high school comes with a big decision... quote obviously where to go to college! Additionally I had made the decision to row competitively at a division 1 program in college, and that time commitment is unlike anything else. Again, making a personal choice of committing to a team for 4 years and taking on the responsibility of that schedule.

When you boil it down, the past 16 years of my life have been spent deciding what classes to take, what sports to play, and what summer jobs/internships to go for. Not too much variance huh?

Now that it's finally the time for the Class of 2013 to graduate, I am definitely realizing that every choice of what to do with my time going forward, is mine. Going through college you think you have an idea of what life post-grad will be like, or what you really want to do... but in my personal experience, as that time actually comes around- you realize that the opportunities truly are endless, and that is most overwhelming of all!

Here's what I know, I want to stay in Boston- because I love love love this city, it's close to my family and friends, and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else. I eventually want to end up in the advertising industry and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get there. I want to continue to row competitively and join the RBC blue and white stripes. And most importantly I want to have fun, and enjoy everything new and exciting about this next adventure in my life!

February Frenzy!

Can the Spring get here any sooner?!

It seems like my life has been whirling around in a thousand directions, I haven't had even a second to stop and fill you guys in! Believe it or not, we're in the home stretch now before Spring break (YIKES!) which also happens to mean that this Friday there will be only a short 11 weeks until I graduate (d o u b l e YIKES!)

In the meantime, *note the change in subject* here's a quick glimpse in pictures of whats been going on lately!

1) Saturday after what was one of the longest morning workouts of my life (an indoor triathlon myself and my teammates and I competed in) my parents picked my up for a much needed weekend at home! We started off the weekend at the Back Deck Boston restaurant located at the corner of West and Washington. We had a delicious lunch, and ended the meal sharing the most decadent chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and a....get this- homemade cinnamon graham cracker, peanut butter marshmallow, chocolate s'more......literally to d i e for! Oh! & I had a delicious old fashioned root beer! To say I was treating myself after the mornings triathlon, is an understatement ;)

2) We meandered downtown a bit before heading back to the car, and stumbled on this cute outdoor bookstore called Brattle Book Shop which happens to be the oldest and largest antique bookstore- established in 1825!!! Crazy! I just loved that it was a snowy, cold afternoon but this alleyway was packed with people browsing the outdoor book shelves!

3) This next one is probably the best news we've had all month....THE CHARLES RIVER IS FINALLY THAWING! My team has been vigorously training indoors for the past two months preparing for our Spring racing season. With our first race the 15th annual Jesuit Invitational just 18 days away we are SO excited that we can finally start getting some much needed time on the water!

4) Lastly I woke up at home Monday morning to a white blanket of fresh snow covering my driveway, my dog waiting patiently at the door for my dad to come in from clearing the snow. Yes, we live just minutes outside Boston and my dad has a John Deer tractor... gotta love him :) really- and really there is nothing like home. The weekend at home was just what I needed to refresh and prep for this last week of midterms, papers and projects before Spring break.

What have you all been up to lately?!

Remembering Someone Incredible

Andrew Rhodes Bourland
(1955-2009)

When I was a junior in high school I met two of the most important people in my life. They are my best friends, they are my sisters, they are family.

Catherine {Cate} Hathaway Hannum (heres her blog!)
&
Elinor {Nora} Walker Hannum (and here's hers!)

We were fast friends and before we could even blink, we had become very large parts of each others' families. When I met Cate and Nora I was lucky enough not only to gain two remarkable best friends, but the relationships that I had with their family members-their sister Charlotte, and especially with their Mother-Mrs. B were unexpected and unparalleled.

The three of us, Cate, Nora and I experienced, and went through many difficult times together over the years. Experiencing things that most 17, 18, 19 year olds haven't typically been faced with experiencing.

This time of year, in 2009 the girls were dealing with an incredibly difficult reality, their step-father whom they adored and who was an incredibly influential, loving, and supportive figure in their lives- was battling a devastating illness. An illness that he had been dealing with for years; cardiomyopathy. He was an incredible man, and one who I am lucky enough to say I was able to meet and get to know, but most importantly I take joy in remembering the way he continually put smiles on everyones faces, and in particular adding an air of happiness and light to Cate and Nora's lives each and every day

Today, on February 16, 2013, as I do every February 16th I am thinking of my best friends, their mother Jeanne, younger sister Charlotte, and step-siblings as today marks the anniversary of Andy's passing. As hard as it is to believe, it was 4 years ago today when we first said our goodbyes. Where has the time gone?

Remembering Andy brings happiness to my day. Thinking of the afternoons spent in their kitchen chatting away and laughing together as Andy sat reading the paper, but out of anything, I will always be thankful to Andy for the brightness he brought to my friends' lives. Two absolutely wonderful girls, who I am lucky to have in my life.

Thinking of you Andy

Giddy with Excitement!

Such exciting news! I have recently been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to interview my absolute favorite entrepreneur/ blog writer, and finally today I will share the wonderfully clever, incredibly inspiring, and fantastically fun information I learned through my interview!

Ashley Brooke, of Ashley Brooke Designs has been my all time favorite blogger for a very long time now. I am constantly amazed not only by the creativity her business exudes, but the fun loving and positive energy I feel when reading her daily blog posts. Seeing the always marvelous product she displays in her online store and her new and trendy illustrations always has me thinking about what exactly it is I love about design, and more importantly... where the heck do I want to go with it! Her savvy business sense, cheery personality and tastefully classic style are a few of the things which I just utterly love about ABD, and as you will see throughout this interview... really what's not to love!

So dive in to learn some fun facts about Ashley Brooke that you might not have known, get a glimpse into where her love of stationary began, and hear some terrific insight on how to find your way to success :)

Enjoy & make sure to stop by her shop when you're through reading!

How absolutely delicious does this recipe look! I can't wait to try it!

Stay warm and keep track of the historic blizzard Nemo!

5 Things I Love about being Snowed In!

With the impending blizzard named Nemo making it's way to the east coast here are some things I LOVE about being snowed it!

BAKING! Being stuck inside is the perfect excuse to have some fun and get creative in the kitchen! I love to bake most all of the time, but when your snowed in it's especially fun to bake up some sweet snacks for the snow day!

COMFY CLOTHES! Theres nothing better than staying in your pajamas all day, It's so comfortable to throw on a big cozy oversized sweater and some sweatpants for your day wandering about the house :)

MOVIE MARATHON! In my house when we're stuck inside, for blizzards or really any reason- there's always a different movie playing on the TV either in the background throughout the day or to cozy up on the couch and watch!

ORGANIZE! This one is totally just a me thing, but if I'm stuck inside I like to re-organize and de-clutter my space! Without having any reason to leave, its easy to start and finish the somewhat overwhelming project of reorganizing your space!

SNACKS! What's not to love about some hot chocolate and popcorn?! These two tasty treats easily tag along with all of your snow day activities :)

Pop of Pink!

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and whether you've got a fun date planned with that special someone, or a girls night out here are a few hot pink accessories to add that festive pop of color to your valentines day ensemble!

I happen to love everything about the newly trending "snood" scarf- and this light pink version is inexpensive and adorable!

We all know I have an obsession with Essie, here is a cute pink color "Mod Squad"

These J.Crew Venus Flytrap Crystal Earrings have just the right amount of sparkle for any occasion!

You can't go wrong with hot pink Kate Spade flats! Keep an eye out- they run awesome sales all the time!

Lastly, I just LOVE this pink cross body bag from C Wonder, a store I have recently been introduced to- and it's incredible!

What kind of Valentine's plans do you have?!
Any super cute outfits your planning to dawn for the occasion?

Making Moves

Today my younger brother Drew will sign his National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 Collegiate Soccer for the UMass Amherst Minutemen, and I cannot contain the pride I feel and excitement I have about this!

I have watched my brother grow up with a soccer ball at his feet. In the beginning just tagging along at my soccer practices when I was younger (coached by our Dad), to starting on his own path to success. It's been 15 years of watching my brothers' soccer games, traveling here and there to see him play. As the years have gone by, we watched him grow into the confident, tenacious, talented athlete and leader that he is today.

I can't help but watch him hit the field now, and see the little kid in the bottom left of this picture- and smile knowing just how hard he has worked to get where he is today. The dedication and commitment my brother has made to this sport and the respect he has shown for his own goals of playing beyond high school is matched by none. Through the highs and lows, injuries or lulls in teams, frustrations and aggravation, he's never stopped working to be better. There was never a moment when I had any doubt my brother wouldn't continue to play soccer after graduating high school- and I couldn't be more proud of him today as he finally will see that dream materialize before his eyes.

My brother is modest, quiet, and somewhat reserved when it comes to his success. He will never be the first to tell you about something excellent he has achieved, instead he would rather keep it to himself. So much so, that when asked if he would take part in the signing ceremony at his high school, he had to stop and question whether or not all the fuss was really necessary.

No newspaper articles, no fluff... just soccer.

He's worked hard for this, and he has become more than just an incredibly skilled athlete, he has become a great leader-something that at times, I'm not sure he thought would happen. Captain of both the varsity soccer team at his high school, and his nationally ranked club team, he has most certainly become an incredible teammate, one that the UMass Minutemen will be lucky to have.

While I still can't really believe that he's going to college next year, I can't wait to watch him take to the field for the next 4 years.

Congrats Buddy, I love you!

Living Vicariously!

A peak into life in Madrid!

Jenna, (the gorgeous blonde pictured above) is one of my newest, and closest friends. We met in a somewhat unorthodox way- I transferred to Boston College my junior year, and quickly became close friends with all of my boyfriend Sean's (the guy in the tie) friends at BC- one of whom (the other guy in the suit jacket) was Blake- Jenna's boyfriend! So as you might be guessing, Jenna and I became friends through the boys' friendship.

However, it's somewhat of a long-distance friendship as she and Blake are from Minnesota, and she attends Miami University in Ohio! Junior year, we were lucky enough to have her visit for a weekend (I say we, but in all actuality her visit was really for Blake ;)) We had a blast that weekend, realized how similar we were and since then we have only gotten closer!

Lately communication has been slightly more challenging though- as she is spending the semester 3407 miles away across the Atlantic Ocean in MADRID the capital & largest city of Spain!

Talk about jealousy! Naturally, as Jenna está viviendo la vida española (I knew there was a reason I took 8 years of Spanish) I am living vicariously through her glamorous weekend excursions all over Europe, and wishing I was there too!

She writes about her travels and her experience studying abroad on her blog Un Semestre en el Extranjéro. It is so fabulous to read about all of the fun she is having navigating her way through Spain (and any/all surrounding countries)!

If you're looking to escape the dreary, cold, winter months here in the good old USA- then you should definitely head over to her blog and take a minute to indulge in her pictures and hilarious commentary on her travels.

Seriously...the pictures are gorgeous and she is super fun- I promise it will be worth your while!

Just a few things I'm loving lately...

1) I have been having a BLAST creating new and fun things for my blog with the Wacom Bamboo Tablet my brother Drew gave me for Christmas!

2) I thought this February Ombre Heart DIY calendar was so simple, and just adorable!

3) These Valentines Day themed Washi Tapes are perfect to seal your valentines, wrap special treats, or add an accent to your daily planner for some extra special notes!

4) I was recently introduced to the Le Pen style pens, and I must say I LOVE them. You can buy them separately, or reduce the price by adding more colors!

5) Last but most certainly not least, I am totally falling for the PBS hit Masters Classics television show Downton Abbey!

What are you loving lately?!

Valentines Day Inspired Manicure!

I have a confession, I have a bit of an obsession with Essie Nail Polish...

Today after my last class of the day I had some free time (I know, shocker right?) and so I decided to spice things up with the nails and do a little multi-color Valentines Inspired fun!

While I don't have the longest nails (thanks to the 20 hours a week of rowing I subject myself too) I still like to have polish on them whenever I have the time!

1) I use the Essie Protein Base Coat to start.
2) Followed by two coats of Essie's "Bachelorette Bash" on all but my ring finger.
3) I used Essie's "Off the Shoulder" on my ring finger.
4) Followed by an added top coat Luxe Effect, Essie's "A Cut Above" on my ring fingers.
5) Finished off with my favorite top coat which again is by Essie, "Good to Go" (how kitchy right?)

I love to do my nails, and a most of the time for me its that 20 minutes of not thinking about anything while adding some pizazz to your fingers :)

Speaking of Essie, don't you just love this watercolor print by Laura Trevey!
